The short answer

The Tesla Powerwall is the best-known home battery, but buying one in Canada is more complicated than in the U.S. Tesla lists the Powerwall 3 at $11,959 before installation, and most Canadian homeowners pay roughly $15,000 to $25,000 installed. The biggest battery rebate in the country, BC Hydro's, doesn't cover Tesla at all.

Tesla changes its Canadian pricing often, and rebate program rules change too. The pricing and rebate figures below are compiled to the best of our ability from Tesla Canada and provincial program pages at the time of writing. Call your installer, confirm current Tesla pricing on the Tesla configurator, and verify current rebate eligibility with the provincial program before signing anything.

Key points

  • ●Powerwall 3: 13.5 kWh usable, 11.5 kW continuous output, $11,959 hardware price from Tesla Canada.
  • ●Installed cost in Canada is usually $15,000–$25,000 for one unit, depending on your home and whether you add solar.
  • ●Ontario: eligible for up to $4,050 through the Home Renovation Savings Program, but taking it means no net metering.
  • ●BC: Tesla products have been excluded from BC Hydro and CleanBC rebates since March 12, 2025.
  • ●There's no federal battery rebate in 2026.

Tesla Powerwall 3 at a glance

Tesla's Canadian site lists hardware prices before tax, delivery and installation:

1 Powerwall 3$11,959
1 Powerwall 3 + 1 Expansion Unit$20,459
1 Powerwall 3 + 2 Expansion Units$28,959

The Powerwall 3 stores 13.5 kWh and puts out 11.5 kW continuously. That's enough to run most major appliances and start larger loads like a heat pump or well pump. It also has a solar inverter built in, which can simplify the install if you're adding new panels.

What installation costs in Canada

Tesla sells through certified installers, and your final price depends on your electrical panel, wiring runs and whether you're adding solar at the same time:

  • ●One Powerwall 3, fully installed: roughly $16,500–$20,000, with Ontario quotes running $16,500–$22,000.
  • ●Two units for whole-home backup: roughly $30,000–$42,000.
  • ●Added to a new solar project: typically adds $14,300–$18,000.
  • ●Other Ontario quotes: $19,000–$24,000 before incentives.

An older electrical panel that needs upgrading can add a few thousand dollars, so ask every installer to include that in the quote.

Rebates: where the Powerwall qualifies, and where it doesn't

Ontario: yes, up to $4,050

Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program pays $300 per kWh, up to $5,000, for a battery installed with new rooftop solar. There are no brand exclusions. One Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh) earns 13.5 × $300 = $4,050. A Powerwall with an expansion unit reaches the $5,000 cap. The rebate also can't exceed half the battery's installed cost.

The catch: if you take the rebate, you can't use net metering for the life of the system. For many homes that's a bigger cost than the rebate is worth. See our Ontario solar rebate guide before deciding.

British Columbia: no, Tesla is excluded

Since March 12, 2025, Tesla products haven't been eligible for CleanBC or BC Hydro rebates. The province and BC Hydro now favour Canadian products and exclude U.S.-made ones where practical. The exclusion covers solar and battery rebates, self-generation and EV charger rebates. Only customers with technical acceptance, or applications in, before that date kept eligibility.

In practice, a Tesla battery in BC earns $0, while a qualified non-Tesla battery can earn up to $1,500 paired with solar, or up to $5,000 if enrolled in Peak Saver. On the same project, that's a difference of thousands of dollars. See our BC Hydro rebate guide.

Everywhere else

There's no federal home battery rebate in 2026. Alberta, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces don't currently have a provincial battery rebate for most homeowners. See what replaced the Greener Homes Grant.

Compare a Powerwall quote and one alternative

The best way to decide is to see real numbers for both. Our form routes to vetted installers who'll quote the Powerwall AND a rebate-eligible alternative so you can compare price, rebates and backup time side by side.

Batteries that do qualify for BC Hydro's rebate

BC Hydro keeps a list of qualified batteries in two tiers:

Peak Saver tier

Rebates up to $5,000

Eguana Evolve (14 or 28 kWh) and SolarEdge Energy Bank (9.7 kWh).

Standard tier

Up to $1,500 w/ solar

Enphase IQ 5P, Canadian Solar EP Cube, BYD, Fortress Power, FoxESS, EG4 and others.

Since April 1, 2026, a battery installed without solar only qualifies if it's enrolled in Peak Saver. BC Hydro has said it's reviewing Peak Saver to add more battery models, so check the current list before you buy.

How to choose

  • ●In BC: Skip Tesla if you want a rebate. The SolarEdge Energy Bank or Eguana Evolve qualify for the full $5,000 through Peak Saver. Enphase IQ 5P stacks are flexible and qualify for up to $1,500 with solar.
  • ●In Ontario: The Powerwall 3 qualifies for the battery rebate, and its built-in inverter keeps installs simple. Enphase's modular 5P lets you size more precisely and add capacity later. Either way, compare the rebate with net metering first.
  • ●If backup power is the priority: The Powerwall 3's 11.5 kW output and built-in backup make it an easy whole-home option, as long as the price works in your province. See our solar battery backup pillar for how to size one.

Is the Powerwall worth it in Canada?

The Powerwall makes the most sense in Ontario, where it qualifies for up to $4,050 and installed pricing is competitive. Just be sure the rebate beats net metering for your home. In BC, the exclusion means you'd pay $1,500–$5,000 more than for a qualifying battery with similar features, which is hard to justify unless you specifically want Tesla. Everywhere else, it competes on brand, integration and output power rather than price.

Before you decide, get at least one Powerwall quote and one quote for a rebate-eligible alternative. Ask each installer to show what your essential loads would draw in a winter outage. A battery is only as useful as the hours it can actually keep your home running.
