The Canada Greener Homes Grant Is Closed: What Replaced It in 2026
Last updated November 1, 2026 · Cross-checked against Canada.ca, IESO, BC Hydro program pages

The short answer
The Canada Greener Homes Grant, which paid homeowners up to $5,000 for retrofits including solar panels, is fully closed. A new $2 billion federal program announced in October 2026 is taking its place — but it only covers heat pumps. For solar panels and home batteries, the money now comes from the provinces. Ontario and British Columbia both offer up to $10,000 for solar plus a battery.

What the Greener Homes Grant was
The Canada Greener Homes Grant launched in May 2021. It paid homeowners up to $5,000 for eligible retrofits, plus up to $600 toward the required EnerGuide home energy evaluations. Solar was one of the most popular upgrades, paying $1,000 per kW, up to $5,000.

What replaced it federally
1. The National Heat Pump Rebate
On October 8, 2026, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a $2 billion investment over eight years to support one million home retrofits. The centrepiece is a new National Heat Pump Rebate, expected to help up to 820,000 homeowners switch to electric cold-climate air-source heat pumps.
| Feature | What was announced |
|---|---|
| Rebate for households below median income | Up to $10,000 |
| Rebate for other eligible homeowners | $2,000 |
| Which installs count | On or after November 1, 2026 |
| Application portal | Expected to open in early 2027 |
| Energy audit | Not required |
| Approval and payment | Approval within 24 hours; payment within 5 days of receipts |
| Limit | One rebate per person |
The program is aimed at homeowners replacing a heating system that has broken down or is near the end of its life, such as oil, propane, electric baseboards or an older furnace. Full eligibility rules were still being finalized at the time of writing, so check the official page before you buy.
For solar shoppers: this program covers heat pumps only. It doesn't include solar panels or batteries.
2. Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP)
CGHAP provides free retrofits, such as insulation and heat pumps, to low- and median-income homeowners and tenants. An approved organization handles the planning and costs. It's delivered through provincial partners in British Columbia (through BC Hydro or FortisBC), Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, PEI and Quebec. You can't apply to the federal government directly. Solar isn't listed as a covered upgrade.
3. What isn't available federally
There's currently no federal rebate for home solar panels or batteries. The 30% Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit is for businesses, not homeowners.

Where the solar rebates are now: the provinces
| Province | Solar rebate | Battery rebate | Main condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario | $1,000/kW, up to $5,000 | $300/kWh, up to $5,000 | No net metering if you take the rebate |
| British Columbia BC Hydro customers only | $1,000/kW, up to $5,000 | Up to $1,500, or $5,000 if enrolled in Peak Saver | Solar rebate moves you to BC Hydro's new 10¢/kWh export rate |
| Alberta, Prairies, Atlantic | No provincial home solar rebate currently open | Varies by utility — check locally | |
Ontario: Home Renovation Savings Program
Ontario pays up to $10,000 combined for solar and a battery, with no energy assessment required. Rooftop, first-time installs only. The catch is significant: if you take the rebate, you can't net meter for the life of the system. An analysis by The Atmospheric Fund found that for most homes, net metering without the rebate pays back faster. Read our Ontario solar rebate guide before deciding.
British Columbia: BC Hydro solar and battery rebate
BC Hydro pays up to $5,000 for solar and up to $5,000 for a battery enrolled in its Peak Saver program, but only a few battery models qualify for the higher amount. Since 2026, you also need a contractor from BC's Home Performance Contractor Network. Tesla products are excluded from BC Hydro rebates. See our BC Hydro rebate guide for the full rules.
Which program should you go after?
- ●Replacing your heating system: Look at the National Heat Pump Rebate. Keep your receipts if you install on or after November 1, 2026, and apply when the portal opens in early 2027.
- ●Solar in Ontario: The Home Renovation Savings Program, but compare it with net metering first.
- ●Solar in BC: BC Hydro's rebate. You need a Peak Saver-eligible battery and an HPCN contractor to get the full $10,000.
- ●Low- or median-income household: Check whether CGHAP is offered in your province before paying anything yourself.
- ●Anywhere else: There's no federal solar money right now. The case for solar rests on your electricity rates, net metering or export credits, and backup power during outages. See our guide to solar and battery backup for power outages.
