Off-Grid Solar in Gulf Islands
Island cottages; year-round island homes; eco-lodges; artist retreats on Salt Spring, Galiano, Mayne, Pender, Saturna, Thetis, Lasqueti
Gulf Islands off-grid market
The Gulf Islands have Canada's highest per-capita rate of off-grid residences — several islands have no grid connection at all (Lasqueti, parts of Saturna). This is BC's most culturally-committed off-grid community. Islands Trust environmental overlays shape every build.
Typical system sizing
Year-round island home: 8-15 kW solar + 30-45 kWh battery + 10-14 kW backup generator (barge-delivered). Eco-lodge: 15-30 kW solar + 60-100 kWh battery + 20 kW backup generator.
Winter design considerations
December production 0.7-0.9 kWh/kW/day — Canada's weakest. Pacific coastal fog + rain Nov-Feb. Oversize solar array 40%+ or plan for substantial generator use.
Grid-extension reality
Several islands (Lasqueti, parts of Saturna, Mayne outskirts) have no grid at all. Where grid exists, Islands Trust extensions are complex + expensive.
Local gotchas to know before you quote
Islands Trust heritage + environmental overlays restrict panel orientation + ground-mount placement. BCUC additional review for larger systems. PST exemption applies.
